The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland will have an opening on its Board of Directors beginning in 2012  for an attorney board member, working or residing in Cuyahoga County.

Applications are being accepted through September 30, 2011.

Legal Aid is a nonprofit law firm which focuses on issues of poverty. Legal Aid's 53 staff attorneys and 1,700 volunteer lawyers  handle about 11,000 civil cases annually. Legal Aid's clients live on the edge. They are individuals who are confronted with a legal problem that - if left unresolved - may result in lack of housing, education, income, food, safety or family stability. These clients have legal rights but without an attorney those rights will not be enforced.

Legal Aid Board members ensure that the organization pursues its mission to secure justice and resolve fundamental problems for those who are low income and vulnerable by providing high quality legal services and working for systemic solutions. Board members oversee an operating budget of $8 million and additional investments; set and oversee the implementation of Legal Aid's strategic plan, policies and priorities; evaluate the work of Legal Aid's executive director; select an auditor to perform the annual financial audit; provide annual support to Legal Aid through a financial gift; assist with fundraising efforts; participate in quarterly Board meetings and regular committee meetings.

Special attention will be given to board candidates with experience in finances, fundraising and social justice causes.

The application process is competitive. However, Legal Aid keeps applications for Board positions active for three years.
