The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland (Legal Aid) seeks an Accountant to fill a new position in our Administration Department. This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Finance and Administrative Operations in all aspects of accounting with a focus on analytical and transactional review, utilizing established accounting principles.
Essential Functions:
- Support Director of Finance in preparation and review of monthly financial statements
- Regular review and analysis of account distribution for accuracy and reasonableness
- Prep and review budget allocations
- Review bank statements and activity, and maintain cash controls and security
- Maintain computerized accounting systems to ensure data integrity
- Review all bookkeeper duties and approve and post ledger entries
- Maintain fixed asset accounts
- Create and review month end closing entries and review of month-end and year-end closing process
- Support Director of Finance in facilitation of all audits and interim work
- Post invoices for payment and approve check runs
- Review quarterly payroll reports and provide back up to Bookkeeper in payroll and other transactional entries
- Prepare financial reports for grant requests
- Act as back up on grant reporting
- Maintain Temporarily Restricted Balances and Federal Funds
- Maintain deposits in accounting system
- Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities: No Direct Supervisory responsibility. Provides guidance to and assists in oversight of Bookkeeper function.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or commensurate experience required
- 5+ years’ experience in finance and accounting
- Experience in working with non-profits and/or legal services organizations preferred
- Computer proficiency in MS Office
- Proficiency in accounting and payroll software
- Experience with Crystal Reports and Sage a plus
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
- Able to establish effective working relationships with a variety of individuals
- Organized, able to prioritize work, able to multi-task and handle multiple responsibilities
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Normal office environment
- Some travel may be required

Compensation: Starting salary for this position will be commensurate with the appointee’s background and experience.
