Mt. Sinai Foundation awards $200,000 to Legal Aid

The Mt. Sinai Health Foundation awarded $4.6 million in its September and December grant cycles, bringing the foundation's total grantmaking for 2021 to about $7 million.

The grants awarded in the second half of the year highlight, according to a news release: the foundation's focus on primary prevention and early intervention of Greater Cleveland's most pressing health issues; its commitment to advance health equity, especially in the Black community and other communities of color; its investment in children and families' well-being and its strategy to support solutions that promote health.

The foundation's board held its final meeting of the year in the new Mt. Sinai Health Foundation offices. Located at East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue, the new offices triple the foundation's space from 2,000 to 6,000 square feet.

The new offices represent a new beginning for the foundation in its 25th year, as does its new name, which drops "care" from its name. Announced last month, the new name reflects Mt. Sinai's "commitment not to health care but health before care," according to the release.

Grants awarded in the September and December cycles include, according to the release:

• Nearly $1.8 million to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland to support its 2022 Campaign for Jewish Needs, the central resource for addressing the health and well-being of the Cleveland Jewish community
• $250,000 to the Jewish Federations of North America to conduct federal advocacy on health-related issues impacting the Jewish and general communities
• $150,000 to the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board of Cuyahoga County to train early childhood mental health therapists across Greater Cleveland in child-parent psychotherapy
• $199,453 to the Canopy Child Advocacy Center to expand capacity for its multidisciplinary care team to address the mental health needs of victims of child sexual abuse
• $250,000 to Case Western Reserve Universityas fiscal agent for First Year Cleveland, a public-private partnership aimed at addressing racial disparities in infant mortality throughout Cleveland and Cuyahoga County
• $250,000 to the Cleveland Foundationas fiscal agent for the Say Yes to Education Integrated Health Initiative to expand physical and behavioral school-based health services in Cleveland Metropolitan School District(CMSD)
• $487,500 to the Health Policy Institute of Ohio to advance evidence-informed state health policy through independent and nonpartisan research and advocacy
• $200,000 to the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland for advocacy and strategic litigation that promotes healthy housing for low-income renters throughout Cuyahoga County
