Cleveland City Council recently heard a presentation from representatives from the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland about the positive effects which would result if poor tenants also had legal representation when facing eviction as a majority of the landlords do. After the national housing crisis, which hit Cleveland first and possibly more severely, many Cleveland landlords are out-of-state companies or bulk buyers who are difficult to get into court to fix their houses up to code. But often they have lawyers on hand to evict tenants.
Council members Kevin J. Kelley (president) and Anthony Brancatelli recently took part in a City Club of Cleveland panel with two New York City council members who spearheaded an effort there to ensure poor tenants had legal representation when facing eviction.
