Hugh’s Legal Aid Story

I am proud to serve on the Legal Aid Board of Directors. I believe it is my duty as a lawyer to see that “justice for all” is not aspirational, but a reality.

My Legal Aid story is an experience I had one cold, rainy morning at a church in East Cleveland. I remember watching the incredibly dedicated Legal Aid attorney Ann Porath unloading refreshments for the local residents lining up for the Brief Advice Clinic. That day, I helped a woman who was sobbing as she said she felt totally powerless in the face of the runaround she was getting from a company, which had mistakenly charged her a bill she didn’t owe.

The stress this was creating for her was enormous. Likewise, her relief was enormous once we together figured out the right human being to talk to about this situation. We cut through the red tape and got the mistake corrected. I have seen numerous other situations where people simply need an advocate to help them navigate a very intimidating system that is unforgiving to the poor and powerless.
