The DOJ Presents: Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals Under Federal Law

Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Heyer will discuss federal law governing service animals and emotional support/assistance animals (“ESAs”). She will explain the relevant Americans with Disabilities Act and Fair Housing Act provisions and discuss practical applications of these laws, including training and certification of service dogs and ESAs, and permissible inquiry into the legitimacy of service dogs and ESAs. She will illustrate the program with examples of how service animals and ESAs assist persons with disabilities, and with cases from the Northern District of Ohio.
