After a long career as a
litigation attorney, Jan Roller, Esq., currently Of Counsel with Perez Morris, had convinced herself that the COVID pandemic had gotten her ready for retirement. But instead of retiring, her volunteer work at Legal Aid increased. She found herself attending more Legal Aid Brief Advice Clinics and taking on pro bono cases.
“It keeps me pretty busy,” she said.
While attending Case Western Reserve University School of Law, Jan learned about the work of Legal Aid and realized that it aligned with her own values.
“I didn’t go to law school to make money. It was to help people. I wanted to give back, so volunteering at Legal Aid was a natural choice,” said Jan. “It’s a great opportunity to give back and to touch the lives of people who need help – those who are confused by the legal process and facing difficult times.”
But volunteering also keeps Jan, a Legal Aid board member, involved in Cleveland’s robust legal community. This includes meeting young attorneys, which allows her the opportunity to offer them advice as they advance in their careers.
“There's so much about being a pro bono volunteer with Legal Aid that is so enjoyable and rewarding. I get a lot more back from Legal Aid than I give.”
With a fast-changing world, Jan understands why Legal Aid’s work is more necessary than ever.
“In our country now, there's such a wide gap between the haves and the have-nots. Legal Aid's work could not be more important to help those who need a helping hand and a friendly face. I encourage others to volunteer with Legal Aid, to give time and resources,” Jan said. “Support Legal Aid because you will get such satisfaction and enjoyment, and a sense of purpose.”
Lauren Gilbride, Managing Attorney for Legal Aid’s Intake Group and Volunteer Lawyers Program, calls Jan a true champion of Legal Aid and its clients.
“Jan is a fierce advocate, whether she is representing a tenant in an eviction, assisting someone at a Brief Advice Clinic or mentoring a new lawyer as they take on their first pro bono litigation matter,” said Lauren. “I am so lucky to have Jan as a partner in justice. Her powerful message about what it means to her to provide pro bono assistance has encouraged many to join Legal Aid and work with our clients for a more just society.”
As she completes her final term as a Legal Aid board member, Jan beams when speaking about the organization.
“I'm so very proud of Cleveland Legal Aid. It's recognized nationally for its great work and innovation in helping others.”
