As a reporter at a local newspaper, Scott Heasley first heard of Legal Aid when he wrote a profile of its services nearly 20 years ago. “I have been a huge fan ever since,” he said.
Scott was impressed with the support and encouragement that Legal Aid provided to vulnerable men, women, and children.
After deciding to leave his career in journalism, Scott earned his JD from Cleveland Marshall College of Law. He started volunteering at Legal Aid Brief Advice Clinics as a law student. Now as a Partner at Brennan, Manna & Diamond, LLC, Scott continues to volunteer because he believes that the clients deserve support and protection when they face legal issues and concerns.
“I love helping pro bono clients negotiate settlements where they can stay in their homes while they find a new place to stay and then we file motions to seal their eviction records,” he said.
Lauren Gilbride, Managing Attorney of the Intake Group and Volunteer Lawyers Program, said that Scott has not only helped clients with evictions but also tenants living in properties with unsuitable living conditions.
“It's been really awesome to see his growth as a volunteer,” she said. “He is a great example of someone that has a long-term commitment to Legal Aid and our clients.”
When asked what he would say to encourage others to volunteer with Legal Aid, he summed it up in two words – "please help."
“There are many families that could use your assistance. Even if you do not think your area of legal expertise applies, attend a Brief Advice Clinic to see what the needs are and how much you can help.”
