Development Intern Needed

The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland (Legal Aid) seeks an intern for its Development & Communications Department to work 12 – 20 hours per week in its downtown Cleveland office.  The internship term September - December, but flexible based on the applicant’s schedule and academic calendar.

This is an ideal position for any individual looking for hands-on experience in nonprofit management, law, marketing, fundraising or public relations.  Legal Aid can provide necessary documentation for course or externship credit, if the student applies for such credit from their university.

The Development & Communications Department focuses on fundraising from individuals, law firms, corporations and foundations; handles public relations; and conducts media outreach.  The development intern will primarily support the Director of Development & Communications.

Primary Responsibilities

  • assist with marketing of Legal Aid’s community clinics including mailing preparation, social media, and other outreach efforts
  • assist with fundraising events and creative ways to publicize Legal Aid’s great work
  • write success stories about Legal Aid’s work
  • assist with Raiser’s Edge (Legal Aid’s donor database)
  • research potential funding sources
  • proofread marketing and direct mail pieces
  • help create mailings and other outreach campaigns
  • assist with preparation for presentations and receptions at local law firms
  • attend community events as a representative of Legal Aid
  • shadow 1-2 Legal Aid attorneys to learn how Legal Aid provides service

Qualifications:  Strong organizational, analytical, interviewing, verbal and written skills.  Previous experience in community social services and knowledge of poverty issues is highly preferred.  Computer and internet proficiency is necessary, as well as strong attention to detail.  An ideal candidate would demonstrate interest in both a legal and nonprofit/government career.

Compensation:  Due to limited financial resources, Legal Aid is unable to pay interns.  However, Legal Aid works with universities to offer credit or service hours for the time interns work.
