The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland's Right to Counsel Program (RTC) was recently honored with a Community Impact Award from Dominion Energy. Speaking at a City Club event celebrating award winners, Managing Attorney Hazel Remesch shared the good news about RTC's outcomes in the program's first year.
“It is one of the most critical systemic solutions that has occurred in our community,” Remesch said of RTC, which operates as a partnership between United Way and Legal Aid. The program launched in July of 2020 and has been a major asset for tenants in Cleveland, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Remesch said, “In the first six months, 93% of clients who were seeking to avoid an eviction or seeking to avoid a voluntary move were able to achieve that outcome.”
