A new rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development protects the right of transgender individuals to housing and services.

Pursuant to HUD’s new Gender Identity Rule, all individuals have equal access to core shelter programs in accordance with their gender identity.

This new rule eliminates the prior practice by operators of single-sex projects using Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) funds that now, under the new rule, must ensure access to programs, benefits, services and accommodations for all individuals in accordance with their gender identify without subjecting the person to intrusive questioning or requiring documentation.
