The DOJ Presents: Federal Fair Housing Act Enforcement and Sexual Harassment in Housing

This program will provide an overview of the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) and include:

  • how attorneys can invoke FHA protections on behalf of their clients,
  • who is protected under the FHA,
  • what types of housing are covered, and
  • what conduct is prohibited.

A review of FHA enforcement mechanisms will address private suits, the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) administrative process, and the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) enforcement authority. The program will conclude with a focus on DOJ’s sexual harassment in housing initiative, including how sexual harassment violates the FHA, highlighting illustrative recent cases in the Northern District of Ohio and elsewhere. It concludes with information about helping clients who have faced sexual harassment in housing file a complaint with HUD and DOJ.

Presented by Assistant US Attorney Michelle Heyer.
