Ohio's nonprofit legal aid groups, where resources are always stretched thin, are formally banding together in a new initiative designed to help serve more needy people.

The Alliance of Ohio Legal Aids is designed to help improve the delivery and reach of legal services to low-income people throughout the state. The legal aid groups in Cleveland and Akron are part of the 11 entities involved.

The groups have collaborated on efforts in the past, and lawyers and staff at the various nonprofits regularly assist one another with issues clients are facing.

But the creation of an alliance will provide an avenue to better share resources, have regular dialogue, identify emerging legal services issues, and identify funding opportunities, said Melanie Shakarian, spokesperson for Legal Aid Society of Cleveland.
