Joshua D. Rovenger, Senior Attorney in Legal Aid’s Economic Justice Practice Group was appointed today to join the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association (CMBA).

As an attorney focused on economic justice issues, Josh handles cases concerning consumer issues, debt collection, unemployment compensation, and student loan discharge. He also works to engage community partners and educate student borrowers about their options. An expert on student loan issues, Josh is often quoted in the media and served as an alternate negotiator on the United States Department of Education’s Affordability and Student Loans Negotiated Rulemaking Committee.

Josh has been active with the CMBA since moving to the region in late 2019. His participation has included chairing the CMBA’s LGBTQ+ Committee, and involvement with CMBA’s Litigation Section. As a new Clevelander, Josh has appreciated the CMBA’s role in helping him build community, develop new connections, and meet other queer attorneys.

Legal Aid and the CMBA have a long history together. Josh is looking forward to building on the work of previous Legal Aid board members and deepening the relationship between the two organizations. For more, listen to Josh’s conversation with outgoing Legal Aid representative Melanie Shakarian in this episode of the CMBA’s My BarStory podcast.

Prior to joining Legal Aid, Josh worked in private practice and served as an attorney at the Project on Predatory Student Lending. Josh received his JD from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and philosophy from The George Washington University.

Celebrating their 150th anniversary this year, the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is a nonprofit professional organization dedicated to serving the needs of legal professionals in Greater Cleveland. Learn more on their website: clemetrobar.org.
