HERO Project Presentation

Legal Aid’s Health Equity for Reentering Ohioans (HERO) project team will be presenting on their efforts to identify and decrease barriers to healthcare access and utilization after incarceration.

Starting in July of 2021, this group of individuals began interviewing stakeholders throughout Ohio on the barriers that reentrants face when attempting to connect to healthcare after incarceration. For many, this process involves lack of access to insurance due to late enrollment penalties or suspensions of coverage. This often means the re-criminalization of mental illness and decreased health outcomes for individuals who have been justice involved. Because the criminal justice system disproportionately incarcerates people of color, this issue further perpetuates racial disparities in healthcare.

All of the team’s findings will be presented and discussed in this one-hour conversation that will empower reentrants with a better understanding their healthcare entitlements post-incarceration, and will explain what Legal Aid may be able to do to help.
