During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the extraordinary service of pro bono volunteers who dedicate their time, talent, & resources to help Legal Aid extend justice.

Volunteers play an important role in helping Legal Aid close the justice gap. Annually, up to 20% of Legal Aid’s matters are handled by pro bono avogados.

One example of this is the story of Victor (client name changed for privacy). Victor was in a rough spot when he got into a motor vehicle accident. He was without insurance, but the accident wasn’t his fault. He thought he would at least avoid having to pay for the damage to the other car – until the other driver decided to sue him.

Victor did not like the idea of trying to fight this lawsuit on his own, yet he couldn’t afford an attorney. He called Legal Aid hoping someone would be able to help him get justice and avoid paying for an accident that was not his fault.

Every year, Legal Aid receives far more requests for help than we can handle, but we are committed to ensuring as many people as possible have the critical legal help they need. That is why Legal Aid leverages our staff with a roster of more than 3,000 volunteer attorneys who provide pro bono servizos.

A volunteer attorney agreed to take on Victor’s case. Victor and his attorney met with the opposing counsel to negotiate a settlement. Quickly the opposing counsel realized they did not have a strong case to sue Victor, and the case was dismissed. Thanks to Legal Aid’s strong network of volunteers, Victor had equal access to justice.
