Janice (names changed to protect privacy) was heartbroken when her husband, Samuel, fell ill. To ensure  he received the care he needed, Janice had to place Samuel in a nursing home temporarily. In the meantime, Janice and her two sons struggled to make ends meet. She went back to work part time to help her sons with the household finances.

Janice grew frustrated – it seemed nothing was enough to keep things afloat and she fell three months behind in her rent. Janice applied for rent assistance from a local agency, but never received a response. She also looked into other agencies that could help with the rent but had no luck. Eventually, she received an eviction notice from her landlord.

Janice refused to allow her and her family to be displaced. Janice contacted Legal Aid for help. Her Legal Aid attorney contacted one of the rent assistance agencies where Janice had applied for help and learned that her application did not go through because her husband’s name was misspelled. Her attorney stayed in contact with the agency to get the application corrected and approved.

Finally, her application was approved for $6,346.50 which covered the back rent that was owed and three months future rent. Her landlord dismissed the case against her. Thanks to her Legal Aid attorney, Janice could focus more on her husband without having to worry about finding another place to live.
