CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Many residents in the downtown Cleveland apartment complex of St. Clair Place are tired of living in the apartment complex they deem “scary”.

The tenants describe scenes of homeless people sleeping outside their front doors and being locked out of their own apartments because of lock issues that had not been resolved by management.

Because of these risky conditions, the group of residents formed the St. Clair Place Tenants’ Association. In December of 2023, the team worked together with the లీగల్ ఎయిడ్ సొసైటీ ఆఫ్ క్లీవ్‌ల్యాండ్ to send a lawsuit to the owners in hopes of them enacting changes.

“The residents of this building are like our grandparents, they’re our elders. We should be providing them with safe and suitable housing,” Lauren Hamilton with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland said.

But the risks are not affecting all residents in the same way. Resident Marlo Buress says that she hopes the owners of the property can make the needed changes to keep her and other residents safe.

“I love it here, that’s why I haven’t moved,” Buress said. “There’s no places I wanna move, I love downtown it’s convenient for me.”

Despite the convenience, even Buress is starting to feel the worry of the security problems.

“One time for like two weeks, I was boiling hot water on my stove,” Buress said. “I said ' if i open up my door, and there’s a man there in front of my door– I’m pouring that water on his ***…excuse me young lady, but I’m serious…”

19 News has reached out to both the building owner, Owner’s Management Co. and the landlord St. Clair Place Cleveland Ltd. but have not received an update.
