Doctor’s visits, hospital stays, emergency room trips, prescriptions and all other health care services result in the doctor or provider creating a new medical record and a bill for the cost of the service provided. Medical records belong to the patient and the patient has a right to the records in most instances. Medical bills will be paid first by any available insurance, then the remaining amount (or the full amount for uninsured people) is the responsibility of the patient. Eventually a person who owes medical bills, but does not pay, may be sued in court.
