The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland regularly accepts applications from attorneys and law school graduates who would like to further develop their skills and serve the community.   These volunteer positions are designed for those who are willing to make a significant commitment of pro bono time, creating an opportunity for substantial involvement in Legal Aid's work to ensure access to justice.  Legal Aid also accepts applications from late-career and retired attorneys for its ACT 2 Program.

New in 2015, Legal Aid is seeking attorneys for a longer-term volunteer commitment as a Community Outreach volunteer.  These volunteer attorneys will engage clients through regular office hours at key community agencies throughout Northeast Ohio.

Position descriptions are listed below.  These positions, except when specified, will be in one of Legal Aid's practice groups: family, housing, consumer, HEWII (health, education, work, income, immigration), community engagement, or intake and the volunteer lawyers program.

Qualifications for all positions include: A commitment to public service and to advocacy for low-income persons; excellent legal writing, research, and advocacy skills; ability to work alone and with a team; appreciation for diverse cultures and communities.

Position Descriptions

ATTORNEY VOLUNTEER: Attorneys in these positions will work closely with Legal Aid attorneys.   They will be assigned to handle cases in particular substantive areas under the supervision of a Legal Aid attorney.   They will interview clients, develop cases and, in conjunction with a Legal Aid attorney, provide representation. Additional Qualifications:   Commit to working a minimum of 12 hours per week for three months.   Must be licensed to practice law.  CLICK HERE to apply.

LAW GRADUATE VOLUNTEER: Recent law graduates will support the work of Legal Aid's attorneys.   They will conduct legal research, review documents, draft memoranda, assist with trial preparation and otherwise partner with Legal Aid's attorneys to assist clients. ATTORNEY VOLUNTEER for COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Attorneys in these positions will provide brief advice via regular office hours at key community agencies throughout Northeast Ohio.  Volunteers will be asked to commit approximately 2-3 hours per month on a regularly scheduled weekday (TBD).
