The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland launched the second video in the new informational video series - Is That Legal?
These short videos aim to describe common legal situations in plain language and help viewers recognize when they may have a legal issue. New videos will launch monthly on Cleveland Legal Aid’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/@LegalAidCleveland - make sure to subscribe!
Future videos in the Is That Legal? series will cover questions related to SNAP benefits, special education rights, kinship care, employee rights, and other topics. Videos will also link to relevant publications and resources to provide additional information. All videos are for informational purposes only and do not constitute legal advice.
The new video dives into a consumer protection issue: what should consumers know about "guaranteed asset protection” coverage, otherwise known as “GAP” coverage, when purchasing a vehicle? In Ohio, when GAP is purchased from a car dealership, it is not classified as insurance under state law, so a consumer doesn’t have the same legal protections that they would have if they purchased GAP from a car insurance company.

The first video unpacks a common tenant’s rights issue: what options do tenants have when repairs aren't made? In Ohio, if a landlord refuses to make necessary repairs within a reasonable amount of time, a tenant can “rent deposit” or "rent escrow," meaning that they pay rent to a court, instead of the landlord.
