Legal Aid is experiencing an exciting period of growth and seeks to expand the capacity of our Executive Team by adding the new position of Director of Strategic Initiatives. The Director will report directly to the Executive Director and will provide high level planning, project management and analytical support for key strategic initiatives at Legal Aid. This will include internal projects, projects in partnership with other organizations, those involving strategic use of technology, and ongoing initiatives in support of Legal Aid’s mission.

Legal Aid has created this Director position in recognition of the growing number of strategic initiatives it currently has underway and the growth in opportunities for new initiatives to serve client needs.  Cleveland Legal Aid’s new Strategic Plan, which will be finalized in fall 2022 will identify new strategies and goals, key partnerships, and growth in the use of technology as key areas for focus.

Director of Strategic Initiatives responsibilities will include:

Project Design and Implementation – Internal and Partnership Initiatives:

Working closely with the Executive Team, Management Team, and staff:

    • Identify new and enhance existing initiatives to meet organizational needs and strategic goals.
    • Develop project plans to ensure successful implementation of strategic initiatives, including identification of data collection needs, development of measurable goals, identification of partnerships, identification of staffing and financial requirements, and internal and external communication plans.
    • Implement, or provide guidance and support to others charged with implementing, project plans, including drafting partnership agreements, execution of project plans, and evaluation.

Project Design and Implementation – Strategic Use of Information Technology

In collaboration with the Executive Team and Managed IT Provider:

    • Identify areas to increase and improve the use of technology by staff and volunteers and to engage with clients and applicants.
    • Develop an annual Information Technology Plan and IT budget, including ensuring a plan for training end-users, development of staff skills at the intersection of law and technology, and continual advancement of Legal Aid’s deployment of technology.
    • Manage Legal Aid’s relationship with the Managed IT Provider to ensure that staff have the IT tools and support needed to do high quality work.

The Successful Candidate will have:

  • 8 plus years of experience in nonprofit management, project management or related work
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Excellent management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent strategic and critical thinking.
  • Excellent change management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including attentiveness to cultural needs and differences.
  • Experience working with IT providers and an understanding of how IT can be used in nonprofits and legal aid organizations.
  • Excellent technology skills, including in MS Office, Windows and databases.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equal justice for persons and communities with low income.
  • Alignment with Legal Aid's goal of creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
