Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association presents a virtual CLE on the recent developments in student loan law, featuring speakers from The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland.

Since taking office, the Biden administration’s Department of Education has implemented various policies to reform the federal student loan system. Most notably, in August 2022, it announced a cancellation program in which borrowers earning less than $125,000 a year (or $250,000 for a family) can apply for between $10,000 and $20,000 in student loan forgiveness. It has also enacted time-limited fixes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and for defaulted student loan borrowers.

This CLE will review these recent developments to provide advocates with the necessary tools to help clients access these programs. It will also provide an introduction to the basics of student loan law and look at other impending regulatory changes – such as a proposal to create a new income-driven repayment program and to reform regulations protecting students from predatory actors.

Speakers:

  • Josh Rovenger, Senior Attorney at The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland
  • Eric Zell, Supervising Attorney, Economic Justice Group at The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland
